The Wechsler-like IQ subtest scaled score metric: The potential for misuse, misinterpretation and impact on critical life decisions---draft report in search of feedback

چکیده

I've recently been skimming James Flynn's new book (What is Intelligence: Beyond the Flynn Effect) to better understand the methodology and interpretation of the Flynn effect. Of particular interest to me (as an applied measurement person) is his analysis of the individual subtest scores from the various Wechsler scales across time. As most psychologists know, Wechsler subtest scaled scores (ss) are on a scale with a mean (M) = 10 and a standard deviation (SD) = 3. The subtest ss range from 1 to 19. In Appendix 1 of his book, Flynn states "it is customary to score subtests on a scale in which the SD is 3, as opposed to IQ scores which are scaled with SD set at 15. To convert to IQ, just multiply subtest gains by five, as was done to get the IQ gains in the last column." At first glance, this statement makes it sound as if the transformation of subtest ss to IQ SS is an easy just and mathematically acceptable procedure without problems. However, on close inspection this transformation has the potential to introduce unknown sources of error into the precision of the transformed SS scores. It is the goal of this brief technical post to explain the issues involved when making this ss-toIQ SS conversion.

The Relationship Between IQ, Memory, Executive Function, and Processing Speed in Recent-Onset Psychosis: 1-Year Stability and Clinical Outcome

Studies commonly report poor performance in psychotic patients compared with controls on tasks testing a range of cognitive functions, but, because current IQ is often not matched between these groups, it is difficult to determine whether this represents a generalized deficit or specific abnormalities. Fifty-three first-episode psychosis patients and 53 healthy controls, one-to-one matched for ...

Motivating the Unmotivated: Making Teacher Corrective Feedback Work

It is often wrongly assumed that the provision of teacher corrective feedback naturally entails learners' attendance to and application of it, but learners have repeatedly been reported not to pay attention to teacher feedback due to lack of motivation and the distracting effect of the grades they receive. The present study was an attempt to tackle this problem. To do so, the technique named Dr...

Attention Problems and Stability of WISC-IV Scores Among Clinically Referred Children.

We examined the stability of Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition (WISC-IV) scores among 51 diverse, clinically referred 8- to 16-year-olds (M(age) = 11.24 years, SD = 2.36). Children were referred to and tested at an urban, university-based training clinic; 70% of eligible children completed follow-up testing 12 months to 40 months later (M = 22.05, SD = 5.94). Stability for...
